Galentine’s Getaway: Amtrak Travel from OkC to DFW + Stockyards Guide

By: Shariah James
I recently took an Amtrak trip from Oklahoma City to the Dallas–Fort Worth area for a Galentine’s getaway—and it was such a fun, easy travel experience. Between the smooth train ride and meaningful time with friends, this trip was the perfect mix of adventure and connection.
Amtrak Travel Tips (Oklahoma City to Dallas–Fort Worth)
If you’ve never taken the train before, here’s what surprised me most:
No TSA or long security lines—you can walk right up and board
Arrive about 30 minutes early (no need for hours of waiting)
Spacious seating—even in economy, it felt similar to business class on a plane
Easy parking and quick boarding
Snacks and roomy restrooms available onboard
I sat on the second level and loved the extra space and views. Since I was traveling solo, finding a seat was easy. If you’re traveling with a group, I’d recommend arriving earlier since seating is first come, first served—especially if you want a window seat.
Why Train Travel Is Worth It
This Amtrak route from Oklahoma City to Dallas–Fort Worth is such a convenient alternative to driving. It’s low-stress, budget-friendly, and gives you time to relax, enjoy the scenery, work or even create content while you travel.
Exploring the Fort Worth Stockyards
Once I arrived, I met up with my longtime friends and headed to the Fort Worth Stockyards—my first time visiting, and definitely a highlight.
Unique shops perfect for browsing or window shopping
Plenty of restaurants and coffee spots
The famous cattle drive at 4:00 PM
The cattle drive was incredible. Watching the longhorns walk through the streets felt like stepping into history. Someone nearby said it looked like “millions of dollars walking by,” and honestly, that felt accurate. The longhorns were stunning—and you could even see their personalities in the way they moved.
Friendship in Your 30s
Beyond the travel and activities, this trip reminded me how important friendships are in this season of life.
In our early 30s, the conversations feel different—in the best way. We talked about:
Career growth and financial planning
Wealth building and future goals
Relationships, marriage, and life updates
We also did a Galentine’s gift exchange, and it was so fun. Somehow, we all bought each other tumblers (different brands, same idea)—completely unplanned and honestly so cute. Everyone left with various thoughtful gifts and full hearts.
The Ride Back
The return trip to Oklahoma City was just as smooth—maybe even better. There were fewer passengers, and I ended up on an upgraded train for the same price. I got home around 11:00 PM already thinking about my next trip.
Final Thoughts: Should You Take Amtrak?
If you’re considering train travel in the U.S., especially between Oklahoma City and Dallas–Fort Worth, I definitely recommend it. It’s easy, comfortable, and a great way to turn travel into part of the adventure.
Would you take the train for your next trip? I know I will.
